Team Info

Atlantic Wavepower Partnership will be led by Charlie Maher.

Atlantic Wavepower Partnership seeks to demonstrate the benefits of flexible multi-cell wave power generators for the production of utility scale power from offshore ocean sites. The team will build on significant past research work to deliver a device with unrivaled economics, survivability and maintainability. With potential ratings of 2.5MW and above, our device offers true potential for large-scale economic wave power delivery.

Our team combines entrepreneurial start-up drive with deep operational experience in the marine environment and is supported by associates with unrivaled experience in wave energy.

Multi-absorber floating terminator array

Team Quote

40 years of wave energy research has taught us that the challenge for wave energy is not to invent yet another variant of known absorption modes, but to solve the challenges of providing a cost-effective and survivable solution. Our technology takes a highly efficient absorber concept and combines this with proven air-turbine systems on a low-cost barge to produce a complete system with no exposed moving parts. With multi-MW ratings possible per device, this technology is ideally suited to utility-scale power production from an offshore wave energy resource.

We believe that demonstrating the potential of this technology through participating in the Wave Energy Prize will benefit the whole wave energy sector, and will prepare us to commercialize our technology in the US renewable energy market.

Team Bios

Charlie Maher – Team Lead

CEO of Renewable Ocean Energy, Inc.

Charlie launched Renewable Ocean Energy, Inc. to pursue his passion as an entrepreneur in ocean-powered clean energy technologies. A former submarine officer, he brings deep technical operations and leadership experience to the firm as well as a solid foundation in business management.

Under Charlie’s leadership, Renewable Ocean Energy, Inc. has joined with AWS Ocean Energy to form the Atlantic Wavepower Partnership to realize the untapped potential of the ocean as a source of clean energy. Through this partnership, Renewable Ocean Energy will have access to AWS Ocean Energy’s advanced wave power technologies for further development and commercialization in the United States.

Charlie brings an exceptional track record of leadership and innovation. During his career in the US Navy, Charlie served four tours of duty on nuclear-powered submarines, culminating in command of the USS MEMPHIS (SSN 691). Most recently, he served as the Chief of Staff at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, the Navy’s organization for research, development, acquisition and lifecycle support for undersea warfare systems employed by US submarines. In this role he coordinated the operations of three business units, managed a budget of $1.2B and a workforce of 7,000.

As a student at MIT Sloan, Charlie prepared himself for a career as a clean energy entrepreneur. Leveraging the resources of MIT’s Energy Initiative, he developed unique technologies to produce high-endurance, low maintenance, deep submergence turbines designed to convert the kinetic energy of deep ocean currents into electrical power for mission-critical undersea infrastructure requirements.
